The Daily Valdemar No. 56: May 8
Valdemar Andersen, for the satirical magazine Klods-Hans, October 20, 1907. |
It is a cartoon of clear-cut lines, a well-known reference and the original sketch is still in existence at The Court Theatre in Copenhagen. A cartoon with a good pedigree, in other words, and the two actors are presented in profile both to be acknowledged by their contemporaries in their respective roles.
Their heads and arms form a circle; embodying the perfect unity that characterises is the most romantic couple in Western culture. The foliage catches the light near the floor disclosing itself as cardboard. Its mass of solid black across the middle is the cartoonist entering the scene to joyfully let us know that it is no small feat making a balcony scene work making the rapport come alive between the two protagonists metres apart. So Romeo is on his toes in exceedingly long poulaine shoes while Juliet is spilling out of her dress to reach down.
The envious moon is sick and pale and about to be cast off.
