The Daily Valdemar No. 51: May 3
Valdemar Andersen, for the daily Ekstrabladet, January 1908. |
Today's moment of calm is an affirmation of the status of the pencil.
We have revered pencils here and here and in the present cartoon it is marked as a symbol of the active mind.
Ove Rode was an editor, author and a member of the municipal council of Copenhagen, when Valdemar Andersen drew their portraits and presented one a day all through January 1908 in the daily Ekstrabladet. As local politicians they were a varied lot and quite a few were drawn heavily seated in their chair - heavy of mind or heavy in their grasp on power. Ove Rode on the contrary was portrayed as the brilliant mind and eloquent speaker among them. Consequently he is doing here what he did best and doing so with authority.

Ove Rode is fortifying his words with one hand in a pocket of trousers of firm vertical lines asserting his position. His waistcoat, however, is lightly patterned with dots that seem almost dancing and assures us that his thinking is one of lively ideas. First and last his pencil is presented as the coat of arms of a person of letters and ideas. This is the level of his speaking.
