The Daily Valdemar No. 49: May 1

Valdemar Andersen, cover for the Sunday edition of "Magasinet" in the
daily Politiken, September 25, 1927.

Today's moment of calm is a salute to the day of workers and of spring: May 1.

In truth it was drawn in the autumn, but the light Valdemar went for is the brighter and colder toned light of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. There is a feeling of at long last being able to work outside again; in this instance smoothing the asphalt with a hint of the machinery behind them. Drops are springing from their foreheads. For now it is still heavy physical work demanding many hands and as such visible evidence that modernism is being implemented to make life faster and more efficient. Their work on the ground is mirrored in the street lamp above with a pylon in the horizon. Modernism is moving in above and below.

Still further above and below is a streak of blue, which is what gives the sense of freedom to the scene. Colour is not filling out any form, but is just creating hints adding to the lightness of the scene. The workers have vertical lines of colour for energy. They work in close conjunction creating a rhythm on the tale of the new age to come.
