The Daily Valdemar No. 40: April 21

Valdemar Andersen, sketch in private collection.

Today's moment of calm marks the most serene among animals drawn by the most serene among cartoonists.

The friends of Valdemar Andersen characterized him by his silence and within that silence the intensity of his presence. Both characteristics were at play when he was listening in on a living creature in order to draw it. The present sketch is of a little cat sitting, standing, and in movement, of which he was obviously fascinated by the flexibility of its spine wishing to determine which muscle moved how. Drawings of this kind were his visual memory treasury to have ready at hand.

The cat may have been enjoying the attention to the full given that it was showing itself off from every possible angle, or rather this tells us how much time Valdemar would spend observing and drawing within just the one session.

One thing do tells us that the cat trusted his presence. Its eyes are as soft and round as its rounded chin and nose and through the sketch we get to be present with the two of them.
