The Daily Valdemar No. 38: April 19
Valdemar Andersen, for the daily Politiken, 1927. |
Her status is accomplished upon receiving the ovation of her audience. She is bowing to the ground as if not worthy of it, which of course accentuates that the applause is all meant for her. The pompoms of her dress and hat form a triangle encasing her hand to her heart.
Her floor-deep kneeling is contrasted by her partner remaining standing. The ovation is not for him. This is 1927 and Anna Pavlova is as much a favorite to her Copenhagen audience as to the rest of the world.
Valdemar Andersen took inspiration from the Toulouse-Lautrec-poster Jane Avril au Jardin de Paris to delineate the stage by way of a double-bass or in his case the two of them of light and shadow. There are two worlds before us and the diva remains out of reach to us her audience.
