In A Country Where Everything Is Humour

Doaa Eladl, July 22, 2020.

"My anger is not due to the vile attack on myself"

- Erdogan explained his condemnation being portrayed at this week's cover of Charlie Hebdo. Legal action shall be taken in Turkey against the magazine.

Well, that was new. Not the legal action taken against journalists, editors and not least cartoonists. They are continually harassed, imprisoned, taken to court and if not found guilty, taken to another level of the judiciary system. The charges will be stating terrorism or false news, covering for the mere fact of the existence of a critical cartoon or tweet against Erdogan.

It is hard to live in a country where everything is humour, Musa Kart said in a statement, when he with the colleagues of his paper were - temporarily - released last year.

Erdogan has no less been playing a military strongman lately, which prompted the cartoon by Doaa Eladl. This is her iconography on the dummies of our day. Those, who insist on the right not to use their brain, and in its stead reacting with anger and threats of repercussions.

This morning Erdogan was bottom page news in French online papers. France is a democracy. Besides they may revert to lockdown this evening.

Doaa Eladl is the recipient of this year's EWK Award. Doaa is a master cartoonist and one of the most important voices of our day. Congratulations, dear Doaa!
