Peter Lautrop begyndte at tegne som 12-årig under opstanden i Ungarn 1956. Det vil sige, han tegnede allerede, men nu så han sine forældre læse aviser, hørte dem diskutere, men forstod intet. Han måtte finde en vej til at forstå.

Nogle tegneres historie begynder pludseligt. De har ansatserne i sig, men en begivenhed bryder ind, som de må reagere på. Det er en historie om overskud og om nødvendighed, noget som skal finde sin form, og det er ikke ukarakteristisk som i Peters tilfælde, at tegningen blev en vej til at fortolke og finde forståelser.

Peter Lautrop took up drawing at the age of 12 during the Hungarian Uprising in 1956. That is, he was drawing already, but now he saw his parents read the newspapers, heard them talking, while not understanding a thing of it himself. He had to find a way to understanding.


Some cartoonists have a story of a sudden beginning. It is there in them, but an event breaks out, to which they feel a need to respond. It is a story of a wealth of talent lying dormant, until a spark sets it off, letting it find its very own outlet, and it is not uncharacteristic as in Peter's case that the drawing became a way to interpret and understand.





Tunesiske Nadia Khiari var i modsætning til Peter Lautrop allerede voksen og kunstner, men fornemmelsen af nødvendighed var den samme, da hun begyndte at tegne Willis from Tunis den 13. januar 2011 - om aftenen.

Næste dag måtte Tunesiens diktator, Ben Ali, flygte ud af landet. Denne aften, den 13., forsøgte han at dæmpe urolighederne omkring sig med endnu en tale. Han lovede at ikke genopstille, og han støttede et frit internet. Ordene var ikke nye, så i den tykke understrøm af løgn, besluttede Nadia Khiari at tage ham på ordet: Jeg har forstået.

The Tunisian dictator Ben Ali fled the country the next day. This evening, on the 13th, he tried to allay the troubles around him by giving yet another speech. He promised to not seek re-election, giving his support too to a free Internet. The words were not new, so in the thick undercurrent of lies, Nadia Khiari decided to take him at his word: I have fully understood.

Denne aften var der stadig udgangsforbud, internettet havde været under myndighedernes opsyn, hun var på alle måder lukket inde, men hendes kat, Willis, kunne åbne en identitet på Facebook og udfordre den lovede frihed. Nadia Khiari forblev anonym endnu 6 måneder, før hun besluttede at stå frem med ansigt, fordi det vil gøre det sværere at gøre hende fortræd. Men Willis er ikke syndikaliseret, som graffiti lader hun ham fri til nå længst muligt ud.

Nadia Khiari avoided revealing her own identity for another six months, but eventually she decided to step forward since it would make it harder to hurt her. But Willis is still not syndicalized. In the manner of graffiti she leaves him free to let him reach out as long as he possibly can.

Katten er også hos Nadia Khiari en sluttet form som hos Peter Lautrop - og som bamsen. Hos hende er den ikke en uskyld, men den er stadig uantastelig. Hun bruger Willis til at gøre det uudsagte konkret. Heri er hun ingen moralens eller omsorgens stemme, hun blotlægger i ordets bogstaveligste betydning. Nadia Khiari skærer igennem faktiske handlinger og verbale konventioner og omskrivninger, alt skal gives virkelighed. 

The cat is a closed form in Nadia Khiari's drawings just as it is with Peter Lautrop – and as are his teddy bears. Hers is not a cat of innocence, but it is still incorruptible. She uses Willis to give solidity to the unspoken. In this she not a moral nor a tender voice, she exposes in the truest sense of the word. Nadia Khiari cuts through obscured actions and verbal conventions and euphemisms, all shall be brought out and given a reality.

Så meget desto mere netop nu, fordi Ben Ali er væk, men andre, lige så korrupte og omskrivende er parate til at benytte sig af øjeblikket. Risikoen for eget liv er tilmed den samme, hvad Nadia Khiari har vendt til en reverens for Ali Farzat, hendes syriske kollega:
